Water Shortage at Sherubtse, Kanglung.

Sherubtseans have been facing the shortage of water since four weeks ago.
It is found that there is sufficient volume of water at the present source and the shortage is due to ineffective and ill-regulated supply. Current supply line has many leakages and much of the water is lost on the way. Present water distribution is imbalanced and ineffective leaving water at one side bountiful and at the other side insufficient. Also, most of the water taps are found to be damaged and open resulting to unused loss of supplied water, which minimize the water current to other parallel lines.
“To our utmost surprise there was no water in the kitchen, toilet and even in bathroom. We have to fetch the water for all the purposes from other hostels or iSmile. We have to get up early morning in order to get a bucket of water just to prepare our meals’’, said Sonam Choden, Evs 1st semester.
It is found that the problem of water shortage at Sherubtse is minimized due to improvement in the supply system. Water shortage at Sherubtse is both a seasonal and perennial problem. During the summer the situation was quite similar to ‘water everywhere, but not a single drop to drink’. Further, at the point of use, water continuously flows with most of the taps and flashers damaged and also, it is found that many of the working taps are also open allowing the water to flow continuously.
Currently, most of the water for the college is supplied from the stream at upper Rongthung and Rongthung River. It is supplied through a 4-inch (100mm) Grippe. Water brought from Rongthung River is put into a stream from which the water was supplied previously. With the growth of population at the college, the demand for increased volume of water increased yearly. And also, with prior permission, Kanglung local community has diverted the water for domestic consumption from the same stream above. From the stream, water is put into a collecting tank from which water reaches the main tank above the boy’s hostel.
“I feel really dirty when I enter the toilet because there won’t be water in the toilet. One has to run to next block just for the toilet. I feel uncomfortable without water. I would be happy if there was a water supply at least morning and evening”. Said Cheten Lhaden, Eco-Geo, 3rd semester.
Problems and drawback in the current water supply is due to small tank at the source, uncovered and without sand filtration. Join of supply pipe leaking at many places. Small and sedimentation tank for the main tank. Water taps; toilets and flashers are not maintained; water running continuously from many taps and toilets flashers in the hostels/college/staff quarters cause unequal flow of water.
